thanks for all the comments ... think it's one of those things that can either polarize or bring women together. same could be said for the working moms that touting career accomplishments to the stay-at-home ... or the childless couple having to listen to all their friends with kids talk about, well, their kids. rebecca: I think your point about gravitating towards the motivated set is so true, as shouldn't matter what they do. which is so disappointing when it goes sideways ... good news is there's always the ones that will surprise you :)

Hi Michelle. We haven't met, but you - I believe - have worked with my husband ages ago in the earlier days at Yahoo!. At any rate, he elevated this post and I couldn't agree more. I continually struggle with - honestly - "mom" perfectionism and over commit on numerous accounts to ensure that i'm doing enough at my children's school (and yes I have overheard other moms comment on "losers" who either don't donate time or money to a classroom) and then my own business (which I was fortunate enough to have started once my third child was born two years ago). My friendships too have changed, but what I continue to realize is that I naturally gravitate toward other "moms" who are equally as motivated - either as a stay-at-home mom or work-somewhere else- mom. In any case, both situations can be isolating and perhaps that is where the discord takes shape. With children all of our lives revolve to a certain degree around their activities. I'm a college-educated, Type A and now I'm changing diapers (still) and doing laundry and mopping the floor (I suck at the housework because I never really 'did' it before kids) in between picking kids up, taking them places, volunteering and trying to run a business ;). Not a ton of time for fun or friendships in the "old" days. I just think parenthood is really difficult and I would love for more "mom" friendships that are supportive and inclusive regardless of 'status'. I think the debate is a tired one too......where did all of the women-stick-together-power go anyway...was it ever here?

Thanks for the post! :)

I agree that jealousy is involved but I think it is also a pretty normal way that people get to know each other. They talk about what they have in common and it seems as though what these "friends" have in common is the school gossip. This could change over time or not. I worked for many years and found some real friends who actually care about what is going on with me. However, most people were just acquaintances who shared nothing but work stuff and who lost interest and contact when we no longer worked together.

I've been on both sides of the fence. Stay at home mom for 11 and then Working Mom (divorced) for 6; I think the great divide disappears when your kids get older as more of the SAH moms go back to work. I can remember being room mom and being pissed that it was all the SAH moms doing all the in classroom work. I'm now the working mom who is left out of conversations and not asked to join book clubs. I think each group is a little jealous of each other. Too bad. Bottom line is, you never know what goes on behind closed doors, or in someone's life or mind. Don't judge.

Bravo! I am glad to see I am not the only one who takes pride in both being a Mother & having a career. I would love to see this topic of working moms & stay at home moms finally put to rest. At the end of the day isnt fair to say we are all loving Mothers, no matter what we do during the day while our children are at school.... Couldnt have said it better michelle!

We found that a nanny share was the perfect combination of personal attention and socialization. I hope you find a solution that works well for your family!
