The Mother of All Conferences

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

There are days I’m especially proud to be a mom. Or a Yahoo. Or even a blogger. Last Thursday and Friday—at the Yahoo! Mother Board Summit—I got to celebrate being all three. (All in 140 characters or less!)

Over 60 women from around the U.S. and Canada, who had formed virtual friendships online as part of the Yahoo! Mother Board, finally came together and met face to face at our welcome reception. Eyes lit up with recognition and shoulders relaxed as the moms stopped worrying about the kids they’d kissed goodbye and started diving into conversation (and mojitos, of course). Listening to these inspirational women chatting at the party, there was no doubt this was going to be one great exchange of ideas.

And it was.

The Climb to the Summit

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

About three years ago, Yahoo! formed some very special relationships with 17 moms. Bloggers, to be exact. Wonderful, insightful, smart bloggers.

Fast forward to today and the Yahoo! Mother Board is 80 women strong. What’s even better, 62 of them are about to meet face-to-face at Yahoo! headquarters for the first time. Of course many of us “know” each other. What was once a product testing group is now a true community. We email through our Yahoo! Group, read each others’ blogs on our monthly topics, tweet like mad (seriously, some of these women must dream in 140 characters) and every now and then meet at industry events. But this is different. This isn’t just another industry event. This is a Yahoo! Mother Board event. Summit, actually.

Though I’ve worked at Yahoo! for 7+ years, I’ve only had the honor of working with these women for a few months. I think I started in my new role the day the Yahoo! Mother Board Summit became official. Talk about diving into the deep end! (more…)

From Anti-Soccer Kid to Pro-Soccer Mom

Friday, June 11th, 2010

It turns out you don’t have to drive a minivan across town at 7a.m. on a Saturday morning to be a soccer mom. You can simply have an 18-month old who chases his big brother around the front lawn while dribbling a shiny ball, and counted “soccer” and “goal!” as two of his first words. Or a 4-year old who insists on wearing shin guards, soccer shorts and the Sweden jersey his grandparents bought him as a souvenir to every single “game” where he doesn’t even make contact with the ball. But that smile and enthusiasm he has out there on the field, those are what make him a dedicated soccer kid. And me a proud soccer mom.

I never played soccer as a kid—and honestly, never really cared for the sport until my kids fell in love with it. Now I play it every day (yes, we even play in the garage when it’s raining), and I love the passion my boys show out “on the field”. We laugh, we get great exercise and I can see that we’re all showing signs of improvement.

And today, as the World Cup begins, I find myself surprisingly excited to share in this experience with my kids. (more…)

Happy Birthday!

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Yahoo! celebrates it’s 15th birthday on March 2nd. This year Carol Bartz, CEO, will be alongside founders Jerry Yang and David Filo to blow out the candles. How cool that Yahoo! is now run by a woman and mom!

My Morning with Martha

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

What a morning it’s been here in NYC! Martha Stewart just wrapped her live show on blogging.

What a treat it was not only to be in the audience, but to have the freedom to take pictures, live blog and tweet during the show – definitely not the typical “turn-off-your-cell-phone” experience. The audience was filled with bloggers from all over the world who came prepared with Netbooks and iPhones to share their live experience over the web.

Live From New York…

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

This morning I am on my way to see the Grand Dame of entertaining, Martha Stewart, as she tapes a show on blogging. I have been a Martha fan for years and have a collection of her magazines happily collecting dust on my bookshelf (note to self: Pledge the bookshelves when you get home!).

Leaving Las Vegas

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

It’s been a whirlwind 26 hours (no thanks to Southwest Airlines!) here in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. Today I attended the Mommy Tech full day session which discussed mom as the decision maker, schedule keeper, memory archivist, and even doctor of the household. Gosh, we wear so many hats don’t we?

My first stint as a Yodeling Mama

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

I work in the Marketing Department at Yahoo! Canada, bringing Yahoo! to Canadians by working with local teams and those across North America on programs, campaigns and sponsorships. It’s a terrific job. And I get to wear jeans to work everyday. Bonus.

Part of my gig is taking me to the BlogHer conference in Chicago. This will be my crash course introduction into the world of bloggers, despite reading a few blogs and having my own brief (like five posts brief) stint in ’04. I’ve since been inundated with BlogHer blogs, tweets and anecdotal water cooler chit chat about what I should be expecting, doing, wearing and seeing. Her Bad Mother (esteemed host of BlogHer events and fellow Canadian) had a great post about it on Monday.

There will be parties (lots of them!) at this conference – and from the sounds of it, they are essential to the BlogHer experience. I’m liking it already. I’ll be attending the MamaPop Sparklecorn Extravaganza (great name, eh?) and keeping my dance card open to see what else there is going on. I’m thinking the whole event will be something between a sorority rush party and being in kindergarten again – hi I’m Joanne – will you hang out with me, can someone tell me how to get to the bathroom, is it time for snack yet?

Pictures from Yahoo!’s Family Day

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Instead of a company picnic this year, Yahoo! facilities put together a great Family Fun Day at headquarters from 4-7 p.m. last Friday. Here are some photos I took. The event was complete with bounce houses, a trampoline, water sports, cotton candy, and even palm tree climbing and giant blow-up, rock n’ roll dinosaurs.
