Back to School, Back to Stay-at-Homes & Work-Outside-the-Homes

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Either I’ve become a lot less tolerant, more confident or just plain tired of the “working mom” and “stay-at-home mom” debate. That wasn’t always the case. As a new mother returning to the workforce, I was very concerned about coming back to work—my job at Yahoo! changed, I had a new manager, new VP and put my 6-month old into day care. I was an emotional wreck, trying to keep it all together and wondering when it would all get easier. Living in San Jose at the time, most all my new-mothering friends were in the same boat—we all returned to work. Partly because we had to, mostly because we wanted to. It didn’t seem odd to me to do otherwise, as I really felt Yahoo! was a great place to be. Although, no chance of joining a “mom’s group” or scheduled playdates at the park in the middle of the day.

So that was nine years ago. I have two beautiful, independent daughters, now 4th and 2nd graders. Since then, my husband and I relocated to the Sacramento area and let’s just say it took me a year to assimilate, and the last few years to realize that, unfortunately, there is still an unhealthy divide between “working” and “stay-at-home” moms. We joke that we moved to “Pleasantville”, where people intentionally move so someone (usually the mom) can stay home. Except us. Here’s the thing—I made the conscious choice to continue working—and take pride in what I do. I feel incredibly fortunate to have found a role within Yahoo! and a manager that is supportive of a remote work arrangement. It’s definitely not the norm, and given me opportunities to be creative, travel internationally and launch an award-winning website. (more…)

Nanny or Daycare? That is the Question…

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

My name is Layla, and even though I have been blogging about all kinds of fun things on Yahoo!, this is my first Yodeling Mamas post, so thanks for reading.

Like most new moms out there, I wake up every morning with a smile and a sigh, because I could really use another hour of sleep, but my daughter’s “cooing” is just too adorable to ignore.

Our family has a pretty regular routine down:
• The baby wakes us up
• My husband and I argue about whose turn it is to get up, even though we both know it will be me
• I breastfeed and then bring the adorable bundle of joy to her father so they can have their bonding moment, which is — you guessed it — getting her diaper changed. (Who said life isn’t fair?) (more…)

Career Boosting Fun at Yahoo! Global Career Week

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Sessions, workshops, opportunities, networking… This was one event-packed, motivational week at Yahoo! thanks to Global Career Week, organized by the Yahoo! Women In Tech. This grass-roots employee organization helps women (like me!) succeed in our careers at Yahoo! by finding great ways to inspire and support not only employees, but the next generation of technical women.

One great workshop at the event was ‘Lego Serious Play’. It was a special hands-on, minds-on learning workshop that helped women explore, realize and articulate their goals—and the potential for action. It was such a fun, interactive way to foster creative thinking through three-dimensional self-discovery exercises, and left everyone feeling energized and mentally stimulated.

Another fun session was ‘Growing Your Career At Yahoo!’. (more…)

A Working Mom’s Favorite “To Do”

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Bragging about my kids at work is one of my favorite pastimes (which makes this whole blogging thing all the more perfect for me). But a couple times a year, I get to take my mama pride to a whole new level. I get to actually bring them with me. Last Friday was one of those pride-filled, crazy-making days. It was Yahoo! Family Fun Day!

Instead of my computer bag, I grabbed the diaper bag. I wiped the ketchup from the corners of my boys’ mouths (though it was quickly replaced with cotton candy loveliness) and headed to campus. Bouncy houses, bubbles, bands…it’s was a kids’ dream come true. And, let’s face it, getting to spend a little time parading my boys around was a dream come true for me, too.

A Working Mom’s Celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Last night, my husband sweetly told my son that he’d drive him to preschool in the morning. Since he’s done that a total of, say, 3 times, this was a big treat. For Munch and for me. (It’s not the he’s unwilling to take him, it’s just that usually Munch prefers I take him and I really enjoy it.)

This morning I decided to forgo the makeup and throw on sweats so I could dive into work. I recently started a new role that has me really excited about getting to work. I’m loving what I’m doing (and I’m not just saying that because my boss is likely to read this). I had a huge list of things to accomplish and since I’m working from home this morning, I could do them all—uninterrupted.

Then—just 10 minutes until preschool departure time—I realized that today is the one day of Teacher Appreciation Week I was actually supposed to do something. Two somethings, in fact. (more…)

Live From New York…

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

This morning I am on my way to see the Grand Dame of entertaining, Martha Stewart, as she tapes a show on blogging. I have been a Martha fan for years and have a collection of her magazines happily collecting dust on my bookshelf (note to self: Pledge the bookshelves when you get home!).

Well before I was into entertaining, decorating, or managing a home, I was reading Martha. (more…)

The Holidays Ain’t Got Nothing on Me

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

The holidays are supposed to be the busiest time of the year, right? Well, I am happy to say that December is calm compared to the past few months.

This fall Yahoo! launched its largest advertising campaign in the company’s history and I was right in the mix of it. On top of the typical balls I juggle as a busy mom, I was simultaneously launching three interactive websites around the globe, developing media plans, working with creative agencies, supporting two in-market events, coordinating with international teams, working consistently all hours of the night (and day!) and even jumped on a plane to London for a whirlwind three nights.

I could go on and on about being overworked, but that’s not the point. I am surely not the only one and feel very blessed to have a job that challenges me and to be surrounded my people who inspire me on a daily basis. The point is that the past few months challenged me as a marketer, mom and wife. (more…)

Keeping Me Yodeling

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I’ve worked at Yahoo! for over six years now. Six years! That’s longer than I’ve attended any school, worked at any job—even 3 weeks longer than I’ve been married. (Then again, I did date my husband for longer than that before we got married, but that’s another story…) During my time here, my life has changed more than I could ever have imagined. My father was diagnosed with brain cancer and has had multiple brushes with death. I’ve been pregnant twice—not so gracefully, I’m afraid—and I’ve been blessed with two beautiful little boys. And every step of the way, Yahoo! has been willing to change with me.

Hello from Hillsboro, Oregon

Monday, August 24th, 2009

I am loving this! I discovered Yodeling Mamas last week and knew I HAD to be a part of it! I have to admit, I am not a blogger. I have never gone there, but I read a lot of them and as soon as I saw this blog I knew it was time!

How do you sum up who you are and who your family is in 300 or so words? If you know anything about me, you will know that I know how to talk and I love a challenge.

Here we go:

I am 37-years-old and have been with Yahoo! for almost four years. I love my job! I am the the supervisor for the Customer Care team in Hillsboro that supports our ever famous Yahoo! Mail product. There is not a day that comes that I do not LOVE going to work. Taking care of people is my passion. I am fortunate enough to get paid to take care of my employees and my customers.

In my off time, I am blessed to take care of my family.

Business travel

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Business travel for me means a trip to the other side of the globe, from Bangalore to Sunnyvale. It has to be the farthest I can go, given the 12 1/2 hour time difference. Thankfully I only need to do this a couple of times a year.

Every time I start planning a trip I am excited at the prospect of “time off,” a change in the routine, for about a week. But the day I have to leave, I don’t pack until a few hours before the flight and print the tickets at the last minute. I just don’t feel like going, and the hour-long ride in the middle of the night to the airport is miserable.
