Teaching Mom Power

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

I think it’s really important for moms of girls to show them how powerful their moms are. I try my best to do this in a variety of ways: working outside the home, volunteering for the kids’ sporting activities (i.e. team mom) and giving back to our community. But I also think it’s important to show them that we moms are physically powerful too. I work hard to stay fit and am always out doing active things like boating, hiking, backpacking, etc. (Carrying all the things you need to survive in the woods on your own back gives you a truly amazing sense of power.)

But my latest physical endeavor had a different spin. It showed physical strength, commitment and just plain silliness. I recently joined forces with my daughter’s soccer coach to compete in a Muddy Buddy race. (more…)

The Sweetest Mother’s Day Gift

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Those of you who know my husband know he’s a pretty amazing gift giver. He’s extremely thoughtful, generous and creative. This Mother’s Day was no exception. He and the boys surprised me by sending me away to the local Westin for a night to enjoy some “me” time. They decorated the room with flowers, musical cards (this was the first year Munch could actually write his name!), candy, wine and magazines.

At 4 years old, my husband trusted Munch with the secret. He knew for a week and worked so hard not to tell. One time he even sang quietly, as if to convince himself, “I have a secret and I’m not going to tell.” And he almost made it. Almost. But when they came back from their last pre-celebration errand, he shouted, “Mom, we saw a limo at your hotel!”

It was ok though. I had my suspicions. This glorious tradition started last year when I was at the end of my rope after just returning to work from maternity leave and having a sick baby who hadn’t slept more that a 2-hour stretch in a couple months. (And, hey, if that’s what it took to be a spoiled for a day, so be it.) (more…)

Should you kiss in front of the kids?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Valentine’s Day may have come and gone, but February is the month of love, right? Gasp! Whether the thought of Cupid and straight-to-the-thighs heart-shaped chocolates make you gag or not, I’ve taken the month to consider the relationship example that my hubby and I set for our young daughter. I also asked our savvy and insightful Mother Board to consider this as well. I promise not to gross you out with the sappiness… well maybe just a little!

Growing up my parents were always lovey-dovey — not in a nauseous PDA way, but in a cute, romantic way. Nearly 30 years of marriage later they are still in love like newlyweds – my father often refers to my mother as his ‘beautiful bride’. Whether they intentionally modeled their behavior for my siblings and I or not, I do believe that watching them as a child made me the affectionate adult that I am today. I am fortunate that my parents were solid relationship role models for me then and especially now with my own marriage. (more…)

Happy 2010 with Love from Elmo

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

I hope that your holidays were as wonderful as they were in my household. The loads of plastic, noise-making, batteries-required toys were dull in comparison to my daughter’s simple Elmo doll (No she did not get the annoying Talking Elmo – thank gawd!).

As far as I know she has no reference of who Elmo is. We don’t watch Sesame Street or have Elmo books. Yet, she is obsessed! (more…)

A Little Scare….

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I found a tumor on my yellow lab, Daisy Mae.

She is six years old which is an age at which dogs could get fatty tumors. But this one felt a little different from the tumors on my previous dogs. So I brought her over to the vet and had him take a look. (more…)
