Maybe Green’s Just Not My Color. Or, Is It?

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

I’ll be the first to admit that I am less than a tree-hugger. Sure, I love the environment but living in the Bay Area where granola is the norm I know I have plenty of room for improvement. Yes, I have the reusable shopping bags but sadly seem to forget them at home 90% of the time. I was inspired by the Yahoo! Mother Board this month as they talked about how they incorporate green living into their homes.

All of the women have great ideas. Teach Mama suggests sneaking in some learning while you and your family tend to the garden. Tippy Toes and Tantrums brought my attention Snack Taxi bags which are cute little reusable sandwich bags that can help eliminate my overuse of the Ziploc bag. I love that It’s All About Balance’s children are “the fiercest advocates in our family when it comes to being green…Wherever we are, they ask if there’s a recycling bin for their papers or plastic bottles, and make sure the lights are off before we leave the house. Clothes that they’ve outgrown go in bags to give to Goodwill.”

While I may not be the shining example of green motherhood, I look up to those women who make such a concerted effort in their homes. I can relate to MamaLaw as she talks about how last year she wondered “whether busy moms could really be “green,” because it just seemed like such an impossible feat at the time.” (more…)

Are Celebrities Good Role Models for Kids?

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

It’s a fact; whether we want to believe it or not, celebrities have a direct influence on us and our families. From the way they dress, to the things they say and the way they act, our kids look up to celebrity athletes, pop stars and movies stars. With the constant controversies surrounding our “beloved” celebs, how do you explain to your children that celebrities are just as “human” as everyone else? Listen in as the Yahoo! Mother Board (born out of a partnership with SV Moms Group) and friends talk about how they explain “celebrity” in their households.

Happy Birthday!

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Yahoo! celebrates it’s 15th birthday on March 2nd. This year Carol Bartz, CEO, will be alongside founders Jerry Yang and David Filo to blow out the candles. How cool that Yahoo! is now run by a woman and mom!

Should you kiss in front of the kids?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Valentine’s Day may have come and gone, but February is the month of love, right? Gasp! Whether the thought of Cupid and straight-to-the-thighs heart-shaped chocolates make you gag or not, I’ve taken the month to consider the relationship example that my hubby and I set for our young daughter. I also asked our savvy and insightful Mother Board to consider this as well. I promise not to gross you out with the sappiness… well maybe just a little!

Growing up my parents were always lovey-dovey — not in a nauseous PDA way, but in a cute, romantic way. Nearly 30 years of marriage later they are still in love like newlyweds – my father often refers to my mother as his ‘beautiful bride’. Whether they intentionally modeled their behavior for my siblings and I or not, I do believe that watching them as a child made me the affectionate adult that I am today. I am fortunate that my parents were solid relationship role models for me then and especially now with my own marriage. (more…)

My Morning with Martha

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

What a morning it’s been here in NYC! Martha Stewart just wrapped her live show on blogging.

What a treat it was not only to be in the audience, but to have the freedom to take pictures, live blog and tweet during the show – definitely not the typical “turn-off-your-cell-phone” experience. The audience was filled with bloggers from all over the world who came prepared with Netbooks and iPhones to share their live experience over the web.

Live From New York…

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

This morning I am on my way to see the Grand Dame of entertaining, Martha Stewart, as she tapes a show on blogging. I have been a Martha fan for years and have a collection of her magazines happily collecting dust on my bookshelf (note to self: Pledge the bookshelves when you get home!).

Leaving Las Vegas

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

It’s been a whirlwind 26 hours (no thanks to Southwest Airlines!) here in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. Today I attended the Mommy Tech full day session which discussed mom as the decision maker, schedule keeper, memory archivist, and even doctor of the household. Gosh, we wear so many hats don’t we?

A bevy of gadgets and software aimed at helping mom stay organized, informed and save time were shown for busy moms on the go. (more…)

Happy 2010 with Love from Elmo

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

I hope that your holidays were as wonderful as they were in my household. The loads of plastic, noise-making, batteries-required toys were dull in comparison to my daughter’s simple Elmo doll (No she did not get the annoying Talking Elmo – thank gawd!).

As far as I know she has no reference of who Elmo is. We don’t watch Sesame Street or have Elmo books. Yet, she is obsessed! (more…)

Mommy Does Vegas

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

This past weekend was a trip. I went to a bachelorette party… in Vegas! Talk about out of my norm as a working suburban woman with a 15 month old daughter.

Out of the 12 women who attended I was the only mom of the bunch. While I was thrilled to be celebrating my dear friend and her pending nuptials, I was as nervous as all get out!

girlfriends

My mind was flooding. Will my hubby and baby be okay at home without me? When was the last time that I was partying into the wee hours of the morning? How much will my hangover hurt? What does a sensibly dressed mom wear to a club? Can I even stay up past my 11pm bedtime?!?!? (more…)

The Holidays Ain’t Got Nothing on Me

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

The holidays are supposed to be the busiest time of the year, right? Well, I am happy to say that December is calm compared to the past few months.

This fall Yahoo! launched its largest advertising campaign in the company’s history and I was right in the mix of it. On top of the typical balls I juggle as a busy mom, I was simultaneously launching three interactive websites around the globe, developing media plans, working with creative agencies, supporting two in-market events, coordinating with international teams, working consistently all hours of the night (and day!) and even jumped on a plane to London for a whirlwind three nights.

I could go on and on about being overworked, but that’s not the point. I am surely not the only one and feel very blessed to have a job that challenges me and to be surrounded my people who inspire me on a daily basis. The point is that the past few months challenged me as a marketer, mom and wife. (more…)
